Hi everyone ,
I had an Idea to write the most famous Iraqi proverbs ( in Arabic and their pronunciation in Latin letters and then their translation into English ) and write its meaning and when it is said and its story .

I hope you all help us in this project but only if you are sure of your information .

طابوك نام شكنك كام
ينطي الجوز للي ماعنده اسنون
عصفور باليد احسن من عشره بالشجره
العرب وين و طنبوره وين
الكرعه تتباها بشعر بنت خالته
اخد الشور من راس الثور
الطول طول النخله و العقل عقل الصخله
كثر التكرار يعلم الحمار
كام اعجبزي خرب دياره
تنابلة الصلطان
مد رجلك على كد الحافك
طخه لو اكسر مخه
معيدي وكل النعناع
رفيج ابن عم حمدنه مص قاغدهه

I know the story of some of them not all, those are the ones that came to my mind, maybe some other time I would provide the meaning of each(even though it is very obvious to understand)

The Eye in Iraqi proverbs :
1- Rad Ykahilha imaha : راد يكحلها عماها
He wants to darken an eye , but he blinds it .
it is said when someone wants to repair something but he spoils it instead .

2- Alif een Lajil een tikram : ألف عين لأجل عين تكرم
One thousand eyes for an eye can be blind
it is said to show that you consider something so important ( an eye for example ) , so if a bad thing occur to it you will revenge by blinding 1000 eyes .

3- Eedah bil maoon we Asabiaa bil oyoon : إيده بالماعون و أصابيعه بالعيون
His hand in a dish ( food utensil ) while his fingers in eyes .
it is said to a blusterer person that eats from your food and put his fingers in your eyes ( does not thank you at all ) .

4- El-dijajah tmot we eenha ala el-mazbala : الدجاجة تموت و عينها على المزبلة
A Chicken die and her eyes staring ( gazing ) on midden ( rubbish )
it is said to greedy person that wishs to obtain everything even if he knows that he is on his way to die .

5- Sarat eenah bgogat rasa : صارت عينه بكوكة راسه
His eyes become on the top of his head .
it is said to a peson when becomes so angry and nervous .

6- Enda el-botoon tima el-oyoon : عند البطون تعمى العيون
When stomaches ( abdomens ) are operating , eyes become blind .
it means that when someone eats ( obtains good things ) , his eyes become blind and forget all his friends and lovers and does not share his good things with them .

7- El-een mati'la ala el-hajib : العين متعله على الحاجب
An eye can not become above an eyebrow .
it is said to someone so as to show your respect and appreciation to him .

8- Eenah bmaoonah : عينه بماعونه
His eye is in his dish ( food utensil )
it is said to a person that is satisfied with his own things and do not wish to have what belong to others .

9- Eyoonah oyoon el-mitiyarchia : عيونه عيون المطيرجيه
His eyes Looks like that of Mitiyarchiya
it means that he looks at people without shyness and impolitely , and Mitiyarchia are people bringing up doves in the top of their houses and flying them everyday and whistling to them so they return home . this is common in Iraq especially in popular zones and among young people . their neighbours consider this impolite as they used to watch their neighbours and disturb them .

10- Matitris eenah gher hafnat trab : متترس عينه غير حفنة تراب
His eyes can not be closed but with mold ( ground ) wisp .
it is said to a greedy person that stop wishing to have everything only when he dies .

11- Yboog el-kuhl min el-een :يبوك الكحلة من العين
He can steal eyeliner from an eye .
it is said to person that he can steal everything whatever difficult it is ! i.e :professional thief .

12- Een ghita we een frash : عين غطه و عين فراش
An eye is blanket and the other is mattress .
it is said to show your welcome ( greeting ) to your guests , so you tell him that even if you have nothing , you will make one of your eyes a blanket and the other as a mattress for him .

Ham Nizil we ham ydabbich ala el-satih : هم نزل و هم يدبج على السطح
He is not the owner of the house and he makes noise on the roof .
it is said if a person live in the house of others and noise them so they said this proverb to show him that he is not welcomed and noisy

Imshi Shahar wala tuobor nahar : إمشي شهر و لا تعبر نهر
Walk another month instead of crossing a river
it is said to show that you must avoid any dangerous things so you must walk for another month and avoid crossing a river that may be dangerous .

Jibank oon tila'tilna firoon : جبناك عون طلعتنا فرعون
We brings you to help us , but you become as a Pharoah .
it is said when someone brings another one to help him in something but he harms him instead i.e. behave like a Pharoah .

Lo attukha lo aksir mukha : لو أطخه لو أكسر مخه
You either touches him gently or breaks his skull .
it is said to a person that does not know how to deal with things moderately , so he is either so gentle or so violent .

Fahl el-tooth bil bustan heba : فحل التوث بالبستان هيبة
Mulberry tree in a garden is prestigious .
it is said a person that is prestigious in his outer look only but form inside he is so silly as Mulberry tree as it is so large and people admire it when compare it with other trees while its trunk is hollow ( weak ) .

El-tihima lahga al-bazzon : التهيمة لاحكة البزون
Accusation is always following the cat .
it is said to a person that he is accused in every problems whenever and wherever they occur as he do them always . as cat steal meat and food from Kitchens , so when something is lost they say that cat stole it .

Someone does not know how to dance say the land is sloping .
it is said to a person that gives false causes so as to excuse ( justify ) his ignorance and faults

you took up some of the typical Iraqi proverbs, proud of you, well done,
There are so many proverbs that we have, since usually when we conversate, we kind of use proverbs very commonly. Especially older people they use proverbs (amthal) between each and every sentence.
