MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO
An update about art and sport in the time of AIDS
by Gilles Denizot (Red Ribbon Army co-admin)
1° TRIBUTE to Patrick O'CONNELL - The Ribbon Project
The Ribbon Project was created in 1991 by the Visual AIDS Artists Caucus, a group of artists who wanted a visual symbol to demonstrate compassion for people living with AIDS and their caregivers. Patrick O'Connell's work as curator, artist, and as Founding Director of Visual AIDS which produced i.e. a Day Without Art, Electric Blanket, the Archive Project, a Night Without Light and the Ribbon Project makes him a crucial voice on the impact of AIDS in the art world.
A Visual Activist Project is a feature length documentary currently in production which celebrates artist led activism during the AIDS crisis in New York City during the 1980'-90's. Patrick O'Connell shares stories and leads us on a journey to understand what was fought and what was gained. Rebekah Dewald (Producer) Demetrea A. Dewald (Director) Sam Kalda (Art Director) Robert Atkins, Tom Sokolowski, Philip Yenawine (Advisors)

2° HIV/AIDS INITIATIVES
a) The 2009 San Francisco Marathon - The San Francisco AIDS Foundation
Todd LANCASTER is planning on running 26.2 miles on July 26th 2009 to help the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. By accepting this challenge, Todd has made a commitment to raise at least US$ 1,800 in order to participate in the >1 Greater Than One race.
"There are times in our lives when we must step up to and do something that scares us, something that thrills us, something that humbles us, something that makes a difference. For me now is that time. I have decided to be >1 and would love your support." Todd J. Lancaster

b) The 2009 AIDS Life Cycle - The San Francisco AIDS Foundation - The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center
Louis CARR is planning on taking part in the 2009 AIDS Life Cycle on May 31st - June 6th 2009 (545 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles). This official cycling event will raise funds for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. Each cyclist is required to raise a minimum of US$ 3,000 in order to participate.
Louis is a formerly homeless gay Black man battling sickle cell, cancer and now HIV (NO HIV CARE). Despite all this and during his 22 months on the streets of Los Angeles, Louis started the "Leon and Mary Fields Foundation" along with the "Do Something Saturday" outreach project in 2007. Two years later, the list of events and programs Louis has initiated is unmatched. His upcoming program geared toward people living with HIV and AIDS will launch April 3rd 2009, one year to the date Louis was diagnosed HIV positive. I invite you to visit the Foundation's website and Louis' Life Cycle page below and donate to help and support.
"Just like sickle cell will have to take my life I will not surrender it, just like my 5th battle with cancer will have to take my life, I will not surrender it and just like homelessness would had to have taken my life, I refused to allow it to defeat me, break me and cause me not to just believe in ME, but in others as well." c) ACT 7, the Wisconsin AIDS bike ride - The AIDS Memorial Quilt
Jeanne MARSHALL will once again take part in the ACT 7, 300-mile, 4-day ride through Wisconsin August 6th - 9th 2009. During the last 16 years, Jeanne has raised funds by doing AIDS walks, marathons, and rides. She then became a training ride leader and the ACT 4 top fundraiser, chairwoman of the participant support subcommittee and managed to make this event a family one with her children being involved every year.
In addition to her sportive events, Jeanne brought 8 panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt to her church in 2000. The AIDS Memorial Quilt was conceived in November of 1985 by long-time San Francisco gay rights activist and Harvey Milk colleague Cleve Jones. In June of 1987, the NAMES Project Foundation was born. Over 14 million people have visited the Quilt at thousands of displays worldwide. The Quilt has redefined the tradition of quilt-making in response to contemporary circumstances. A memorial, a tool for education and a work of art, the Quilt is a unique creation, an uncommon and uplifting response to the tragic loss of human life.
"My interest in supporting those living with HIV/AIDS started when a former employee shared that he was HIV positive. He was a farm boy from Wisconsin. I have worked to raise funds for AIDS support organizations ever since. I now ride those miles on back country roads which were paved in order to get milk to market and so the story comes full circle back to that farm boy that started me on this journey. Riding until AIDS is over." Jeanne Marshall

PETITION TO END HIV DISCRIMINATION IN UK SCHOOLS
The National AIDS Trust (NAT) is the UK's leading charity dedicated to transforming society's response to HIV. They have recently raised a petition to end HIV discrimination in schools.
Children with HIV have been refused places in schools just because they have HIV, and teachers with HIV have also faced discrimination. Despite the NAT repeatedly contacting the Department for Children Schools and Families about this, so far there has been no action.
If you’re UK based, please join this campaign to put an end to this terrible situation! Please follow the link below to add your name to the petition:

MILK: THE MOVIE
Released towards the end of 2008 in the US, ‘Milk’ has now arrived on European shores. Don’t miss this excellent re-telling of how Harvey Milk was to be elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in America. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum – and his election team went on to great things themselves – Cleve Jones, for example, went on to conceive the idea of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at a candlelight memorial for Milk in 1985. Never mind the awards, this is an unmissable film, regardless!
